Distances are approximate. Airports: Weeze 45 km, Eindhoven 47 km, Maastricht-Aachen 47 km.
We start with KempenBroek, shared with Belgium and recognised by Unesco as a biosphere reserve. It is a wide, well-opened-up area on the border between Dutch and Belgian Limburg, level with Weert. This is where you get the open space and the silence. The area is made up of woods, marshland, hay meadows and brook valleys.
1 Second is RivierPark Maasvallei. It runs along the Limburg stretch of the Meuse and consists of a wide network of river arms, levees, channels, gravel lakes, open roaming country and floodplains. Around 630 hectares of that landscape has been laid out as nature reserve.
2 De Meinweg covers around 1,800 hectares. Woods, heathland, moorland pools and brook valleys make for a varied landscape. It is the only area in Limburg where the adder is found.
3 De Groote Peel is the smallest national park in the Netherlands, which makes it no less remarkable. It is known above all for the visible history of peat cutting. In the breeding season more than ninety bird species can be found there.
4 Last of the Limburg Big Five: het Leudal. The reserve covers some 900 hectares, a large part of which (500 hectares) is managed as a reserve by Staatsbosbeheer. It is a very popular walking area of picturesque brook valleys.
